This is some great stuff from Ryan Singer, designer at 37signals. He discusses the usability of sign-up forms at the Future of Web Design in London.
I was looking for some inspiration for my next theme release (wordpress powered magazine) and I came around my favorite magazine, BusinessWeek.

Designed by: Modernista!. They completely redesigned their magazine also, you can read more about the redesign here.
Everyone’s talking about making money online nowadays. Wordpress Themes is one of the ways to make some money and Brian Gardner has figured it all out. He started out just a year ago designing themes for WordPress. There’s absolutely no doubt he has a good taste in simplicity. Brian has released 10 free themes and 3 paid-for themes. Let’s look at how Brian made $5,000+ from a single theme.
Two months ago, he released the Revolution Theme, then later released Revolution News Theme, and then the Revolutions Sports Theme. Essentially, they are all the same, different colors.
- Original Revolution Theme: ~49 themes sold x $59.95 = $2937.55
- Revolutions News Theme: ~18 themes sold x $99.95 = $1799.10
The total: $4736.65. That’s just the minimum. I am sure people bought different packages. That’s a pretty good money for a day worth of work. I don’t know how long it took him, but it doesn’t seem that complex to create. Nate Whitehill charges a hell lot of a money for a custom design, may be he should adopt Brian’s model. Small Potato should learn something from Brian Gardner, if he ever wants to become a much bigger potato.
Maybe I should start designing some “premium” themes? Hmmm.
Powerpoint…. pfft, that’s old school! The new way to give presentation is to print out screenshots and put it on the table! This video is creative and funny. If it was done in PowerPoint, I wouldn’t have watched the entire clip. Here’s the video explaining what social bookmarking is using Delicious.
I love creative presentations. Here’s another one I saw a long time ago:
The almighty Amazon.com will get a makeover in the coming days. Here’s a preview of what the new site will look like.
I am a huge fan of the usability and simplicity that Amazon offers. Many web designers have a great deal to learn from their website. There are very few companies out there who invest their great deal of time and money into making things easier for their customers. Here are some FAQ about the redesign. They are always such an inspiration. Speaking of inspiration, check out different types of showcases on Elements of Design. Good stuff.
When you’re designing a website, you really don’t have much space to put all the information. Sometimes not enough, sometimes too much. When the web designers don’t have enough to put on the site, they slap the header with a pretty picture, and when they have too much information, they cram everything on the first third of the page. Your job as a webmaster is to decide what things go where. Now, this concept isn’t new, but by the end of this article, you’ll have a better understanding of how to organize information. You have to find out the most important content vs the least important content, and then divide that information into 4 parts:
